Game Points at 6pm Tuesdays for July!

Just announced today, Game Points with Matthew Ross, normally 9pm-midnight Tuesdays and 6-8pm Sundays on TSN 990 Radio Montreal, will be live on the air at 6pm Tuesdays for the month of July.

The show will be the same mix of great sports analysts, witty banter and overall entertainment. We should cycle through our regular stable of top notch guests, from all disciplines. We hope you find time to tune in 6-10pm every Tuesday for the July period.

Notes: Mathieu Darche isn't coming back to the Canadiens and we need to accept it and move on. A class act and model player, Darche brought marginal skills to the rink, NHL-wise, and the Canadiens are better served bringing in cheaper, bigger, stronger, faster, more physical alternatives. I get that he speaks both languages, but that alone shouldn't keep him in the fold....The Montreal Impact got pasted at home by Toronto FC the other day, effectively losing any momentum they thought they had with their new designated player and improved stadium. Casual-at-best fans like myself probably won't follow much the rest of the way, especially with the Alouettes starting up....Speaking of the Alouettes, I am bullish on them this season. Their offence should be the same and their defence much improved. That tells me that a division crown and semi-final home game are in the cards for the 2012 season...

Montreal Alouettes News and Notes: What progress has been made in Marc Trestman's contract negotiations, Stephen Garcia is officially an Alouette

As the CFL season rapidly approaches, the mystery continues on with the Montreal Alouettes and their contract negotiations with Marc Trestman.

As reported by some local media members, that an agreement could be completed by the July 6th home opener versus the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. We're eight days away from this supposed target date, but could a deal be consummated in-time by both parties.

As tradition with Trestman he will continue to decline conversing about contract talks. But at some point, the media will eventually hound him if no deal is announced by this "soft" deadline date.

Stephen Garcia Contract

As announced by the Montreal Alouettes, Stephen Garcia received a three year deal. Could he even last the duration of the contract's life?

Right now, for Garcia it is a matter of getting acclimated to the Canadian game. During his time with the South Carolina Gamecocks, he had great difficulty with his accuracy. There were times he did not read the defense in making the correct read.

If Garcia could become a sponge and learn from future hall of famer Anthony Calvillo, it could make the transition a bit easier in improving on these problems.

But for now, Garcia will have a huge target on his chest if he is not able to grasp the Canadian game quickly.

Finally, considering Garcia's history, could management pay close attention to his off field habits. Could they ponder having one of the respected veterans in the locker room police Garcia, and make sure he is on the straight path than being tempted by the vast social scene of Montreal.

Garcia is a fascinating story, but there is a split amongst passionate Gamecocks fans who have tweeted to me that they hope he is on the right track. Others feel he is destined to never realize his true potential.

We will find out.

Montreal Alouettes add Stephen Garcia to their roster

The Montreal Alouettes have forged ahead and added former South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback Stephen Garcia to their roster.

Garcia will start at the bottom of the quarterback totem pole behind the likes of Anthony Calvillo, Adrian McPherson, and Josh Neiswander

The chances of him dressing this season could only happen if the aforementioned three quarterbacks go down with an injury.

The biggest question that will be directed at the mercurial player, could he stay on a straight path while playing in Montreal? Given how this city is considered to be the Las Vegas of the north. Garcia was suspended five times during his Gamecocks career for various transgressions from keying a professor's car to underage drinking.

This could be considered a huge gamble by the Alouettes to sign Garcia. But if he could stay on right path, and learn from Calvillo, this would be a perfect match for a player trying to rekindle the lost talent that made him the most sought out high school recruit.

For now, Garcia must quickly adapt to playing three down football, a bigger football field, and most importantly adjusting to life in the very vibrant city of Montreal without getting himself into trouble.

Chris Schultz of TSN Previews 2012 CFL Season

Five Questions As The Montreal Alouettes Prepare For The Calgary Stampeders

As the Montreal Alouettes prepare for their first regular season game against the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium.

Here are some five questions of what to look for during their opening tilt on Canada Day.

Five things to keep an eye out for

How fast can the team defense adjust to the new principals, schemes, and pace of Jeff Reinebold's defense?

With the shock hiring of the former Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach to oversee this unit, it would be intriguing to see how well this group plays in the 3-4 formation.

So far during the preseason the defense looks solid as they accumulated nine sacks. But now it is for real, and the Alouettes get a great test against a Stampeders offense considered to be one of the best in the CFL.

Management did sign a plethora of defensive players to bring in a new attitude to this group that towards the end of the 2011 season was ineffective.

The only issue is how fast could they develop team chemistry.

Will Anthony Calvillo be able to go unscathed during the regular season?

In the last few years, Calvillo has suffered injuries that could have ended his season. But he continues to come back.

Without question the team's success is based on Calvillo being healthy. If he is injured for a long stretch of the season, it could be a tough uphill climb considering how the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Toronto Argonauts look prime to make a run for the division title. Furthermore, his long time backup Adrian McPherson did not have a strong preseason.

Calvillo will need his offensive linemen to protect well, and he will need to make the correct read to avoid getting any unnecessary body shots from the opposition.

Could the special teams make a game changing play?

During the Grey Cup runs the Alouettes prided themselves on their special teams making a game changing play.

Last year, it seemed this unit withered away as they could not muster anything in-favour of them.

Fast forward to present time, in-order for Montreal to be successful they will need the special teams to give them better field position, and more points on the board. Now, have they identified the players who could bring a different element onto the field. We will find out this Sunday.

Who will step up into the leadership role?

Already the team's fan base was not too happy when the Alouettes decided to part ways with the popular Anwar Stewart.

Even though it was only three years ago when the they won the Grey Cup, the likes of Bryan Chiu, Ben Cahoon, Avon Cobourne, Matthieu Proulx, and Stewart are no longer apart of the organization.

Who from the next generation of players will step up to the plate, and take on this role to continue the excellence of winning that was established by the previous leadership council.

How focused is Dwight Anderson?

There is no denying how close Anderson is with his former teammates in Calgary.

Once again, could he get too excited playing his former cohorts? Even though his first season did not end too well, it seems that Anderson looks more focused to repay the faith that coaching staff has in him.

If he could display the old form from a few seasons ago, it will go a long way in helping the Alouettes secondary reclaim their confidence that they lost during the 2011 season.

Montreal Alouettes Steal Ameet Pall From The Calgary Stampeders

In a calculated move that has backfired on the Calgary Stampeders, the Montreal Alouettes have swooped in and signed their 2012 first round selection in Ameet Pall.

Over the weekend, Pall was released by the Stampeders due to a lower body injury. Calgary general manager John Hufnagel must have felt that he could have stashed Pall onto the nine game injured reserved if no other CFL team would pick him up.

It could be considered egg on the Stampeders face, the Alouettes must be given credit for keeping their eyes open on the waiver wire.

Pall brings tremendous amount energy onto the football. He was an All-American at Wofford College where in his junior season he had 12.5 sacks. In his senior year, his numbers took a dip due to him attracting double and even triple teams from the opposition.

Pall has an explosive first step off the line of scrimmage, he has great speed coming off the edge, and never stops until the whistle is blown. Some pundits have made the comparison to Dwight Freeney of the Indianapolis Colts due to how similar their physical statures are.

The curiosity now begins, where does Pall play in the schemes that defensive coordinator Jeff Reinebold has produced? He has limited playing experience at outside linebacker considering he recently has only prepped for this position in hopes of garnering an NFL tryout.

For now the hometown kid will get to realize one of his dreams by playing for the Alouettes. Kudos to Montreal for staying on-top of the waiver wire and signing a talented player.

Fan Consensus Pick joins the Montreal Canadiens

Going into the 2012 NHL Draft, Habs fans were rooting for their team to select the Sarnia Sting's Alex Galchenyuk.

Galchenyuk's size and talent up the middle gives Canadiens fans hope that their team just drafted the elusive no.1 centre that this franchise has lacked for so long. TSN had him ranked as the no.5 skater in this draft, but that was in large part due to his knee injury that caused him to miss nearly all of last season in the OHL. Had he been healthy, he may very well had been ranked no.2 or even first.

At McLeans Pub on Friday night, the bar gave a reaction of 'obviously' when the Edmonton Oilers took Nail Yakupov with the first pick. The crowd then cheered once the Columbus Blue Jackets took defenceman Ryan Murray because that meant Galchenyuk was there for the Canadiens' taking. Moments later the bar then burst in cheers again when Trevor Timmins called Galchenyuk's name on the podium. A strong majority of Habs fans all loved Galchenyuk as a possible selection, and fortunately for them, so did the Canadiens brass.

His 31 goals, 52 assists for 83 points in the 2010-2011 season is the body of work in which sold the Canadiens and his combine scores made everyone confident that his knee is fully healed.

Whether Galchenyuk plays this year, or next year, Habs fans should be excited because it's the best prospect they've had at the forward position in over a decade. What, who ended up being better?

Galchenyuk seems like a perfect fit for Montreal, due to his traveling around the world, in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, etc... he'll enjoy the European feel of the city. The native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin considers himself an American. He's played for US hockey so there really shouldn't be any talk over the so-called 'Russian Factor'.

Just a little food for thought, and to illustrate that Habs fans have new found hope for the future.

Danny Desriveaux Signs With The Toronto Argonauts, Could Anwar Stewart Be Far Behind?

In February, Desriveaux was granted his release from the former club so he could find a better situation elsewhere to get more playing time considering how loaded the Alouettes are at his position.

He is reunited with former Alouettes offensive coordinator Scott Milanovich who should feel at ease knowing that he has a player familiar with his system that he employed in Montreal. Furthermore, it enables current Argonauts quarterback, Ricky Ray to have another experienced player in this system who could help shed more light on route adjustments.

Even though Desriveaux has not been a major contributor with the Alouettes for the last couple of seasons, it does weaken a division rival.

As the season approaches, could Anwar Stewart be far behind in signing with Toronto? Throughout the off season it has been mentioned numerous times that the Argonauts have a vested interest in Stewart. We will surely find out the true worth of Stewart once a CFL team is hit by the injury bug.

The Montreal Alouettes Release 14 Players From Their Training Camp

This afternoon the Montreal Alouettes released 14 players from their training camp roster. There are not too many surprises, however, those who were let go by the organization could be brought back to their practice roster or later on during the season if a player suffers an injury.

In move that was expected the Canadian quarterback duo of Kyle Graves, and Kyle Quinlan were released. But this is not the end of the road for them as they still have eligibility to go back to CIS football for their fifth year.

In the short-term they will feel disappointed of not being able to crack this year's roster. But for their long-term development it would be a better option they go back to their respective schools to have more repetitions, and come back prepared for next year if they're invited to a CFL camp.

Don't forget that Graves is a punter. Even though he wasn't able to beat out incumbent kicker Sean Whyte, he could potentially catch on with another CFL squad.

As I mentioned yesterday's article, Dylan Hollohan, defensive back from St. Francis Xavier is a very talented player. But due to his injuries he sustained in the 2011 season it could have attributed to him not making the roster. A scenario that could exist is him being invited back to the practice roster, or head back to school, and gain more playing experience.

Overall, head coach Marc Trestman and his staff should feel confident of what they deem a roster worthy of vying for a third Grey Cup title in the last four years.

The only issue is keeping everyone healthy for the duration of the season, which is easier said than done.

Pacquiao-Bradley Aftermath

The immediate emotional reaction and social hysteria dies down from Timothy Bradley's controversial SD (split-decision) victory over Manny Pacquiao that saw some misguided and enthusiastic souls dubbed the decision as the: "Robbery of the Century". Cooler heads seemed to have prevailed and many boxing fans and insiders are now viewing the Pacquiao-Bradley decision as an incorrect one, as opposed to the "worst of all time" one. Here are 3 points that stood out in my mind following the controversial outcome:

1- The judging criteria for scoring a round in professional boxing are based on: -Clean effective punching, Effective aggression as well as defense and ring generalship, with the emphasis being on clean effective punching. However, judging is subjective and the Pacquiao-Bradley fight had many rounds that could be deemed "swing rounds" (2,3,7,9,11,12 qualify in my opinion) swings rounds are rounds in which the fighter who landed the cleaner blows isn't clear cut, therefore you are left to score the round based on the other two criteria. When a fight has approximately 6 swing rounds, what often happens is that judges will split the swing rounds between the two fighters (3 each). On June 9th, it seemed that two of the judges scored almost ALL of the swing rounds in favor of Bradley. Something seldom seen in regards to the underdog fighter. The decision was a product of statistical improbability as opposed to a product of complete incompetence or corruption.

2- That being said, the way a boxing fight is scored needs to be consistently revisited. It's impossible to ignore that many casual fight fans thought Pacquiao was the clear winner which begs the question: Is scoring a fight too complicated to begin with? Keep in mind that many boxing fans watch a fight and determine a winner at the end instead of scoring it on a round by round basis. Most of the time, the two formats will come up with the same winner, however in some cases fights are different and much closer when scored round by round. Pacquiao won rounds in clearer fashion than Bradley did but theoretically to win a round by a close or large margin (minus knockdowns or fouls) results in a 10-9 score. Should the loser of a close round get a 9.5 score instead of a full 1 point deduction? This scoring method applied in some parts of the world should definitely be looked at being adopted universally. Under the 0.5 scoring format Pacquiao would have been the clear winner.

3- Ultimately though what stuck with me immediately after the fight was that the Manny Pacquiao who dominated and knocked out consecutively ( from Jun 08 to Nov 09) David Diaz, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto is no more. Pacquiao who at age 33 and 60 fights into his career (his first pro fight was at age 15) has shown signs of decline having gone the full 12rds distance in his last 5 fights. He hasn't looked (in this bloggers humble opinion) particularly impressive in his last 3 contests (Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez, Timothy Bradley) especially in the second half of fights. Maybe that's a case of Manny establishing such high standards and I'm being overly critical but be that as it may, this version of Manny the one we just saw fight Bradley would not be able to defeat P4P rival Floyd Mayweather...

The Montreal Alouettes Prepare to Finalize Their 2012 Roster, Who Could Make The Final Cut?

Today, as the Montreal Alouettes coaching staff congregate at their Olympic Stadium office  to finalize their opening day roster, there are anxious players hoping to keep their football dreams alive beyond training camp.

Let's take a look at who has a chance of cracking this deep, talented football roster.

Noel Devine, RB: It seems the former West Virginia product has matured since his playing days in the U.S. For those who recall in 2011, Devine abruptly left the Philadelphia Eagles training camp, and it seemed he would never realize his football potential.

So far in Canada, Devine has shown glimpses of what made him a Youtube star, with his explosive ability. He could be an excellent compliment to starting running back Brandon Whitaker.

If Devine stay's focus on the football field, he would be the Alouettes best recent signing in the last few years.

Josh Neiswander, QB: A year ago no one knew his name. Today, because of his strong training camp performance the coaching staff felt comfortable to release former third quarterback, Ricky Santos.

There is no doubt Neiswander will be dressing this season. At times during training camp and in games he has looked better than current number two quarterback, Adrian McPherson.

Neiswander has paid his dues in learning the system from Anthony Calvillo. If he continues to progress nicely throughout the season, could he be in the discussion as a potential starting quarterback in the future?

Dylan Hollohan, DB: This is a player who should have been selected in last month's CFL draft. But his 2011 season was derailed due to injuries.

Some AUS pundits have considered Hollohan the best athlete in the conference. The St. Francis coaching staff had comfort knowing they could leave him on an island by himself, as a result, he displayed an explosive ability towards attacking the football.

Hollohan might be small in stature, but he has great heart, and a deep desire to show why he was one of the premier defensive backs in the Atlantic conference.

If the Alouettes do consider keeping him on their practice roster, he could eventually become a contributor on the special teams with a chance to potentially play on defense.

Etienne Boulay A True Role Model For The Alouettes Community

As the Montreal Alouettes continue to soldier on through training camp towards finalizing their 2012 roster.

I have been asked by many passionate fans on why did they release Etienne Boulay? In life, once anyone that reaches the professional ranks of your field it becomes a business. No one is in control of their destiny unless otherwise.

In the case of Boulay, he is arguably one of the most popular figures in the franchise's history since they came back to the CFL in 1996.

There could be the argument from some pundits that Boulay is too camera friendly, and that he is seen at all the big events. For those who recall, the late great Gary Carter never shied away from a camera. What everyone failed to realize Carter always had time for the fans, and anyone he encountered throughout his great life.

The same can be applied to Boulay. Not once have I seen him say no to a fan for an autograph. Win or lose he always had time to converse with everyone in getting to know his football admirers.

Beyond his football skills, Boulay always had time for the community. For example, earlier in the calendar year, my cohort, Matthew Ross was organizing a roundtable discussion about the "Realities of Sport". He was looking for an Alouettes player. The first name to come into my head was Boulay. As soon as I sent him an invite, an immediate reply came my way to say he was on-board, and how he was looking forward to coming on-air.

During that show, Boulay impressed everyone about his knowledge on all subjects, he talked about his tough injury tales of the 2011 season, and how he was looking forward to a fresh start in 2012.

Boulay proudly represented the Alouettes, the city, and province. If you don't believe the impact he has, just view his Twitter feed and see that he has close to 13,000-plus followers.

After Boulay's release, a bitter taste has been left in plenty of fan's mouth about management's decision to move on without him. But as usual in the aftermath, Boulay was very classy in flashing his infectious smile in thanking the organization that gave him an opportunity to realize his dreams by playing for one of the best CFL organizations.

As Boulay moves onto the next chapter of his playing career. He can most certainly be proud of the team accomplishments by going to numerous Grey Cups, and coming away with two championship rings.

But beyond Boulay's football achievements, he has become an ambassador for the next generation of Quebec football players to aspire for by making their dreams come true through hard work.

It might be hard for everyone to see Boulay in a different uniform, but most certainly the majority of fans will continue to support one of the true professionals of this sport.

Week Two Montreal Alouettes Preseason Thoughts

As the Montreal Alouettes prepare for their final preseason game against the Toronto Argonauts. Already the organization has rocked the CFL world by releasing Etienne Boulay, Diamond Ferri, and Mark Restelli.

Could there be more potential big name releases in the horizon? As I stated through the various shows on TSN 990, I believe that the bulk of the roster is set. However, on defense there is more uncertainty.

Transitioning from a 4-3 to a 3-4 base formation is easier said than done. It requires different size players to play in the front seven of the defense. If they do not have these elements it will be a difficult conversion to minimize any deficiencies in mastering this formation.

Even though the defense had tremendous success in their first outing against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in accumulating six sacks. I don't think they showed off the actual looks they will be throwing at opposing offenses this year.

The fans better brace themselves that there will be plenty of trial and error early on in the season until they're comfortable with the schemes.

Looking ahead for Tuesday afternoon's tilt:

I believe Anthony Calvillo and the first team offense will play the entire opening half. Already the team has lost receiver Brandon London for an undetermined time due to a concussion he suffered in their loss to the Blue Bombers. Head coach Marc Trestman should be cautious in trying to walk a fine line of not putting any of his key personnel in harm's way of severely getting injured.

I believe that if Adrian McPherson has another shaky outing, this could plant a seed into the minds of team management they might need to look at future options if he will not be the heir apparent to Calvillo.

I believe that if Noel Devine has another strong performance, he will cement himself as the compliment to starter Brandon Whitaker.

I believe the Alouettes still need identify who will be their short yardage running back. There is no issue on how much team speed they have at this position. But if Daharran Diedrick will be called upon again, they need to get him involved during Tuesday's game.

I believe the team's linebackers are far from being determined. Right now, defensive coordinator Jeff Reinebold needs to take these moving parts and have them settle down. With the release of Ferri, and Restelli, it seems the second level is slowly coming together.

The Montreal Alouettes Release Etienne Boulay and Diamond Ferri

As first reported by The Montreal Gazette beat writer, Herb Zurkowsky, the Montreal Alouettes have released Etienne Boulay, and Diamond Ferri.

The Boulay's release is quite surprising. But this will mark an end of what has been a 12-month rollercoaster ride for the local product.

In 2011, he went from being groomed in taking over the safety position once Matthieu Proulx retired, to suffering a concussion against the Saskatchewan Roughriders that resulted in him missing the rest of the season.

The Ferri news does not come as a surprise considering all throughout the offseason there were whispers about his future with the organization after general manager Jim Popp signed Rod Davis, and Mark Restelli.

Furthermore, with the ascension of second year linebacker Bear Woods into the current rotation it seemed that Ferri was on borrowed time. Finally with his transition back to his old safety position it could have  signalled that the end was near if he wasn't able to make as a defensive back.

It is obvious that new defensive coordinator Jeff Reinebold will be taking the best player regardless of past history with the Alouettes.
From a public relations standpoint this will not make the fans happy seeing a fan favourite in Boulay being released.

What Is Next?
It is very tough to gauge what could be the market for both of these players. Each one brings a different element. But if there was a percentage placed on who could immediately catch on with another CFL team, it seems Boulay is the more the desirable option.

However, until all of training camp is completed, and potential injuries that could happen in the next two weeks, both of them will have to wait patiently by the phone for another chance in the CFL.

Duke Lemmens Is Chomping to Make The Montreal Alouettes Roster

On the eve of the Montreal Alouettes training camp in Lennoxville, Quebec, there are many names the fans won’t recognize on the team’s roster.
One intriguing player to keep an eye on is former Florida Gators defensive end Kristofer “Duke” Lemmens. As previously mentioned in an old article, Lemmens is a blue collar player. He was apart of a dominant four year run by the Gators which saw them win the ‘08 National Championship, and play in another BCS bowl game.
This will mark the fourth consecutive year that a Gators player will be attending Alouettes camp. The two other players to take part in previous camps were Chris Leak, and Dallas Baker.
Lemmens will have a big uphill climb to make the team. But if he continues to display the non-stop hustle on the field, it could go a long way in catching the eye of head coach Marc Trestman.
Furthermore, Lemmens has experience playing the linebacker position. If he is called upon to make the transition to the second level of the defense it could be enticing for Trestman to keep an import player who is versatile to play multiple positions on the field.
Finally, until we see the actual base formation of Jeff Reinebold’s defensive schemes, if the offseason rumour of transitioning from a 4-3 to a 3-4 is confirmed, it could be fascinating to see Lemmens rush from the edge in this formation. His size of 6’3, 253lbs is more suited as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 formation.
But I am certain he will be more than happy to play anywhere in-order to crack this roster.

Five Questions On The Montreal Alouettes For 2012 CFL Season

As we inch closer to the Montreal Alouettes training camp, here are five questions that I have as they embark on a new football season.
Is Marc Trestman’s new contract imminent?
As we last left off, Trestman clearly stated at the 2011 season end press conference that he would not discuss this matter. Some media members speculated that a new deal would be consummated entering the 2012 calendar year.
Yesterday, at the first press conference of the season, Trestman continued on with his message that his contract is not for the public to know but him and management to figure out.
However, earlier this month Montreal Gazette beat writer, Herb Zurkowsky tweeted that he was informed by a team member that everything should be cleared by the July 6th home opener.
It has been an odd affair that Trestman’s overall body of work has not resulted in a sewn up a deal. This could bring more grey clouds if there is no announcement by the beginning of the season.
Will Adrian McPherson get more playing time this year?
In the last media session of the 2011 season, McPherson was diplomatic in saying the right things in assessing his future with the team. He knows very well that it is Anthony Calvillo’s team. But how long could McPherson be a backup quarterback in this league?
He is in the prime of his career, and the clock is  ticking on whether or not he could be a starting quarterback.
So far, McPherson has been patient if he is willing to bite the bullet in 2012, next year it could be his team, his huddle, and be franchise quarterback for years to come.
Right now, he doesn’t have much leverage to demand a trade out of Montreal. His best option is to sit back and see how things unfold this training camp, and into the season. He could be on the field sooner rather than later.
Which Jeff Reinebold will we see?
Last time anyone saw the former Winnipeg Blue Bombers coach, he was riding his Harley out of the Manitoba. Sure, his first go around as a CFL head coach could be summed up as a comical roller coaster experience.
But he went away down south and tagged along with June Jones to learn the nuances of coaching at the University of Hawaii and Southern Methodist University. Now he is back, much toned down, mature, and ready to revitalize this Alouettes defense.
So far, from reading the player’s tweets on Twitter, they’re excited to see what the principals are in this defense. According to reports, it will be much more aggressive than the passive zone schemes that was employed by former defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar.
With his return to the league, Reinebold will have a lot of national media attention on him which could bode well in allowing Trestman to do his own thing.
Right now, from all indications, the schematics will be completely different, so every player needs to be on their game to crack this roster.
Could there be more changes to the Alouettes roster?
During the winter, a number of familiar players were released from the team. In early May, general manager Jim Popp has not stopped as he parted ways with Kerry Carter, Michael Giffin, and Ramon Guzman.
Clearly, the 2011 season was a reminder to management that in their mind it was unacceptable they were ousted in a home semi-final playoff game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
It seems that Popp has already started the process to move away from the core group of players who were instrumental during their first eight Grey Cup trips.
Now he is looking at the next generation of players to carry the torch.
Could the Alouettes potentially lock up Jamel Richardson to a long-term deal?
There is no denying that “Optimus Prime” is the most popular figure amongst the fans. There is an indication that the torch is slowly being passed from Calvillo to Richardson as the future face of the organization.
Richardson has put up astronomical numbers during his four years in Montreal and is considered to be the best receiver in the CFL. With that territory, it is time to fairly reward a player for his hard work.
Already the floor of this deal will be comparable to Tiger-Cats addition Andy Fantuz. Fantuz will annually be getting at least $180,000 and with bonuses it could escalate even higher.
Popp has already locked up the likes of Brian Bratton, S.J. Green, and Brandon London. Theoretically, could he invest more money into one position group where he might need this “free” cash to sign other players? Could he potentially make an offer to Richardson’s camp that is less than the Fantuz deal?
It is not out of the norm for Popp to allow big name receivers to walk as in past instances the likes of Chris Armstrong, and Jermaine Copeland signed elsewhere for better money.
Already the team office has suffered bad publicity. Richardson is one of the few bright stars this organization has that they need to keep on-board. We’re now seeing fans at home games wearing his jersey than any other current Alouettes player.
If the unthinkable happens that the organization decides to part ways with their superstar, don’t be surprised if Richardson receives a call from the Toronto Argonauts where he has a history with their head coach Scott Milanovich.
But for now, I believe that at some point the organization will come to an agreement with their superstar to finish his career in Montreal.
Stay tuned.
